BOTANICAL NAME: Calendula (from Latin calendae- the first day of the month which refers to the long flowering period of the plant) officinalis
DESCRIPTION: Calendula extract is derived from the flowers of c. officinalis, a member of the calendula genus. It is commonly known as the marigold. The extract is yellow to orange in colour and has very little odour. This specific plant is likely native to southern Europe, however was also naturalized in northern Europe by the United Kingdom as well as other temperate regions of the world. Flower petals of the calendula plant have been used medicinally since the 12th century to treat stomach ulcers and menstrual cramps. Calendula flowers contain high levels of flavonoids (antioxidants).
